Equipment, accessories and performance data of the film scanner The Epson Perfection V700 Photo has been replaced by its successor Epson Perfection V800 Photo in November 2014. We tested the device extensively in the summer of 2007 and wrote the test report on this page. In the following I will describe my experiences with the Epson Perfection V700 Photo - mainly about the scanning of negatives and positives. The test is thus only to show whether the Epson V700 as all-in-one solution produces useful data when digitizing film material, so one could perhaps avoid spending the purchase costs for a film scanner. However it cannot be expected that a flatbed scanner, which is designed to mainly scan reflected light material, will yield as good results when it comes to scanning film material as a pure film scanner, e.g. So there's nothing opposing a comparison.
The price also is in the range of an affordable film scanner. With the Perfection V700 Photo, Epson offers a flatbed scanner, whose technical data at least on the paper come up to those of a film scanner. I a lso have a Microtec flatbed/film scanner that cost $650.00 back in 1998, and this one compares with the Microtec, but runs on a USB connection rather than the SCSI connection.In our online shop there are film holders and accessories for the Epson V700 Photo still available.Ĭomparing the scans of a high-quality film scanner with those of a flatbed scanner with transparency unit, one can determine clear quality differences, which are similar to the difference between the results of a small digital compact camera and a big digital mirror reflex camera with the same resolution. Most scanners in this lower price-range use reflected light to scan slides and negs, which results in terrible scans. However, the new one scans film and transparencies utilizing a light head in the cover, which is the correct way to do it. The old scanner is an 8½"x14" flatbed and this one is 8½"x11". This scanner replaced an HP scanner I bought in 1995, and the only reason I replaced it is because my new computer won't accept the SCSI card to run that scanner, running Win-Vista Premier 64-bit. The only reason I gave it a 'GOOD' rating rather than an 'Excellent' one, is that the slide and film holders are really quite flimsy, and I have looked to buy a replacement for the and can't find them anywhere, even on the Epson website!

I'm uploading a shot professionally edited and scanned by a film lab, and my own edited shot scanned on this scanner. Colors don't come out particularly vivid, but images 'straight out of the camera' usually need to be edited anyway.

It automatically crops images, and though I haven't found out how to turn this off, I'm pretty happy with the job it does. At a decent resolution and using digital ICE (which doubles scan times) it took about 15 minutes to scan around 8 frames. It's not particularly fast, but it's not too slow either. I use it on an older version of MacOS and the only issue is I have to jiggle the mouse between frames or it stops scanning.

The software impressed me, there's no bloat and even though this scanner came out in 2007 there's a version for Windows 11 and MacOS 10.15. It seems to be the same part as the V600.Ī nice little scanner that can do either documents or camera film. I 3D printed some but I think you can find them pretty easily online. Note: If you're using this for film (I am) you need the film holders that shipped with it originally. Make sure you have the plastic film holders!
